Past Projects

Growing Concern does many smaller projects every year as well as maintenance and custom growing plant material for our own projects, municipalities, garden centers and businesses. Below are a range of projects that we hope will show you Growing Concern's diversity.

2006 Projects Included:

Hannaford's, Wal-Mart and WS Development:
Growing Concern took on the management of Hannaford's Wal-Mart and WS Development's property. This involved the care of the grounds, tree and shrub care as well as any improvements in the landscape.

Catholic Church: Growing Concern was hired by the Catholic Church to remove the foundation planting around the burnt church. We replanted them at our Farm on Manning Street and will care for them until the church is rebuilt in the spring.

Calais Middle/High School: The project that I enjoyed the most this year was one I did with the 7th grade class at the Calais Middle/High School. I was given the opportunity to teach a class in horticulture with the goal of dividing the students into design groups and developing a landscape plan and installing it with the class. It was the high point of my winter.

St. Croix Country Club: Growing Concern was hired to develop a master plan for the St Croix Country Club. We redesigned the Club House and installed a shrub planting in the front. This will be a multiyear project. www.stcroixcc.com

2005 Projects Included:

Calais Heritage Park: We were ask to design and install the Calais Heritage Park . It was a project that involved tearing down a block of old warehouses between Maine St. and the waterfront and creating a place for people to hang out with walks gardens and water features

Veteran's Clinic: The results of the above project attracted the Veteran's Clinic to move beside the park. We were hired to landscape the planters and foundation area of the new clinic. We were also hired to maintain the plantings

Wedding Cake House: I was giving the opportunity to design the grounds of the Wedding Cake House in Calais. It is an Italianated Victorian with a large lot and a very interesting history. We started by changing the color from white to a 3 color Victorian color scheme. From there we installed gardens, rock features, and trees. The owner has developed a passion for hydrangeas and I am looking forward to many more projects with her and the Wedding Cake House.

Devil's Head Beach: Growing Concern was hired to design a walkway and stair system to allow easy access to the beach at Devil's Head. We were able to use 2000 lb. granite stones to create a natural stair case that will hold up to the 16-17 ft tides of the St Croix River.

Calais Avenue: Growing Concern planted Dutch Elm decease resistant Elms on Calais Avenue, a street that was historically covered with Elm trees.

2001 -2004 Projects Included:

Holiday Inn Express: Landscaped Holiday Inn Express in Prince Edward Island. We also managed the grounds and supplied seasonal color. The Charlottetown Holiday Inn Express may have been the first hotel to have organic management of the grounds.
